Malta had been the base of operations for the Knights of St. John (Hospitaler) since their inception. Their duty was first to protect the interests of the Roman church and secondarily to provide comforts for Christian pilgrims. There is no doubt in my mind that the Knights had been involved in money laundering on behalf of the church and that they were only formerly disbanded once digital laundering became more efficient. If the police delve deeply enough I’m sure that they’ll find that the accused are connected to the Knights.
